I was reading this post on The Farm Chicks blog about how they polished their silver. I have a whole set that needed polishing but I've been putting it off because it is so time consuming. The Farm Chicks way just seemed too good to be true but, I decided to give it a try. Here are a few of the pieces. The light shining on them made them look a lot better than they really were.
First, you line a baking dish with aluminum foil & put your silver in.
Then sprinkle baking soda over the top.
Next, pour boiling water into the pan, enough to completely cover the silver & let it soak.
Check it out! Gleaming...literally, gleaming!
I couldn't believe it worked so well. Each time I pulled a piece of silver out of the pan to dry it off, I would show my family in awe..."Look at this! I can't believe it works!" They thought I was nuts!

That is TOTAL news to me. I have a huge
silver punch bowl. Right now I'm trying to figure out how to cover it with boiling water:)
I'm with Victoria. Never heard of this before. I'm really particular with my silver...Does this method etch it at all??? I have some platters, bowls and plates that I would love to do this way!
As far as I could tell it didn't etch it at all. Seriously, it was so easy! And, Victoria, I will be thinking of a solution for you!
I remember learning abouth this in chemistry in Jr. High, but our teacher just used a tarnished necklace. I never thought about using it on silver (not that I own any)
Awesome... glad to see you finally got it out. :) Now you can use it and not have to worry about all the time trying to clean them.
I had heard of this before although not quite exactly the same. Is it supposed to be baking powder or baking soda? I had heard soda, but your blog says powder so I just want to be sure...thanks!
Just found your blog via Just A Girl and I'm loving it!! Thanks for this great tip- can't wait to try it out!
